A mobile laboratory is a laboratory that is either fully housed within or transported by a vehicle such as a converted bus, RV, or tractor-trailer. Such vehicles can serve a variety of functions, including:
• Science education
• Science research
• Air, water, and soil analysis and monitoring
• Bio safety
Science education takes the novel use of mobile lab. In some cases, the mobile laboratory travels to a school, museums, and other community organizations, providing the school with educational resources they otherwise lack. The mobile laboratory coalition is a loose partnership of groups that provide such services. In other cases, students must also travel to the mobile lab, such as when the lab takes the form of a boat or a train.[4] Mobile laboratories have recently been gaining favor from the National Institutes of Health, in the form of the particular mobile laboratories such as the Biobus and the Boston University Mobile Lab, as a way to develop knowledge and understanding regarding biotechnology and medicine amongst the United States population.
Mobile Laboratory Coalition
The Mobile Laboratory Coalition is a member organization of traveling laboratory and other laboratory-based education programs built upon scientist and educator collaborations to address the nation’s science education challenge by providing equity of access to authentic hands-on, inquiry-based, contemporary science education for K-12 students, educators, and the community.
Vision of the Mobile Laboratory Coalition
The escalating importance of science and technology to the prosperity of American society demands an educated populace able to meet pressing science career needs, ensure national economic development, and improve human health. The Mobile Laboratory Coalition is a partnership of traveling laboratory and other laboratory-based education programs, institutions of higher education, and K-12 schools and school systems, built upon scientist and educator collaborations that will address the nation’s science education challenge by providing equity of access to authentic hands-on, inquiry-based, contemporary science education for K-12 students, educators, and the community. Providing equal opportunities for all populations will ensure that those who have been historically disadvantaged and underserved will finally gain access to the science and technology workforce.
Goals of the Mobile Laboratory Coalition
• Develop and disseminate a national network of mobile science laboratory programs with a common vision and shared curriculum to inspire an appreciation and knowledge of science and scientific inquiry
• Provide equal opportunities in science education for ALL students and teachers consistent with state and national standards
